Guano mining ceased.

1874

The guano mining ceased. It was during the mining that all of the vegetation was removed as well as 3 feet of topsoil. Goats were also introduced to the island to be used for meat and milk. They ate any vegetation that would start to grow, and would even eat the algae from the reef flat at low tide!
