Happy new year!
January 1st, winter in The Netherlands. Outside it's freezing cold. Time to look forward into the new year. Our family has lots to look forward to. We are going on a long trip, taking us back again to beautiful Australia. On this trip we most certainly will also visit Lady Elliot Island. For me and my wife this will be our third time. After our first visit in 1998 we promised each other to come back to this very special place, far away from home. We snorkeled as much as we could in the 3 days we had on the island. It may sound silly but we were kind of shocked to see not one but three giant rays swimming close by on one of our first snorkelling trips. We did not realise these creatures could be so big and actually felt a little intimidated. We were told that these harmless manta rays were frequent visitors to Lady Elliot and that they have an enormous wingspan. So, back into the water as fast as we could. Apart from manta rays we also saw turtles and lots of fish. After a long day in the water we enjoyed a romantic sunset with a glass of wine near the lighthouse. Why did we only stay for three days? In 2006 we came back for another 5 day stay. This time with our then three year old son. He loved the island and quickly got used to island life. At this time we were Padi certified divers but my wife was pregnant with our daughter so she could not join me on the diving trips. We hope to go diving again together this time. So looking forward to seeing you again in May or June. We can't wait!
