Turtle Season

The magic of turtle season is fast approaching and we couldn’t be more excited!

Green and Loggerhead turtles nest on Lady Elliot Island between November and February. Nesting normally occurs after dark, at a time when there is sufficient water for them to swim ashore, usually in association with the high tide.

Then, approximately 8-9 weeks later and normally between the months of February – April the baby turtle hatchlings emerge from the sand after dark as the sand temperature cools.

To witness this natural wonder, why not book our Turtles on Tour package which runs from the 1st November 2015 – 24th March 2016 and tick this amazing natural event off your bucket list!

Foto Frenzy Update

The next Foto Frenzy Workshop (25th April – 1st May 2016) has booked out in record time! Foto Frenzy is an interactive workshop open to beginner or experienced enthusiasts that are looking to take their photography to the next level.

Participants are coached by world renowned photographers Canon Master Darren Jew (who has photographed some of the planet’s most amazing landscapes and wildlife), Sean Scott (who is leading the way in coastal landscape and surf art photography), Gary Cranitch (who works with the Queensland Museum and has co-authored books such as the Great Barrier Reef ‘A Queensland Museum Discovery Guide’) as well as the Canon Collective Team with their Queensland ambassadors and award winning photographers Colin Baker and Greg Sullavan, who will all share their knowledge and expertise to help perfect your photography skills.

Extended to 7 days/6 nights, the workshop is based on the concept of ‘Capture to Print’ with endless shooting opportunities above and below the water, review sessions, group presentations and break outs which will culminate in a print exhibition of participants work on the final night.

Unfortunately, due to overwhelming demand for the workshop we are completely sold out. If you are interested in participating in future Foto Frenzy Workshops, please contact Reservations on 1800 072 200 or email [email protected] and they can put you on a waitlist/keep you updated.

Meet 'Little Lady' and 'Elliot'

Two cute and cuddly koalas at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary were named on Friday 18th September by our Managing Director, Peter Gash and Member for Currumbin Jann Stuckey MP. Peter Gash and Jann Stuckey MP both bid for the naming rights of two koala joeys at a recent fundraiser for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

Jann Stuckey MP and Peter Gash, together named the koalas 'Little Lady' and 'Elliot' after Lady Elliot Island.

Even though there are no koalas on Lady Elliot Island, there will now be two koalas supported at the Sanctuary who are fittingly named after our eco-conscious island paradise.

“At Lady Elliot, we are always looking for ways to protect the environment and the marine life, so to be able to help these koalas at Currumbin Wildlife by supporting the sanctuary and the great work done under the guidance of Dr. Michael Pyne is very much in line with our philosophy and culture”  - Peter Gash

Expecting Manta!

It’s manta madness on Lady Elliot Island and we have been having some incredible manta encounters! Some divers were lucky to see a very pregnant manta on a dive recently, something you don’t see every day. Hopefully we will get to see her little pup!

Project Manta

Did you know that Project Manta have identified 867 individual Manta Rays of the East Coast of Australia and approximately 90% of those have been sighted at Lady Elliot Island!

You can help Project Manta by reporting mantas sighted in the East Australian waters. Email the Project Manta team at [email protected] and send your manta photographs (underbelly side) as well as any relevant information about the sighting (your name, location, date, number of manta rays observed, behaviour).

False killer whales

Over the past few months there have been numerous sightings of what we believe to be ‘False Killer Whales’ off Lady Elliot Island! According to our records there have previously been no sightings of False Killer Whales in the waters surrounding Lady Elliot Island prior to recent years. Each of these interactions with the species have been amazing and we are more than happy for them to come and visit Lady Elliot Island again.

For the bird lovers

You never know what is going to turn up here on the island, whether it be in the water or on land. Back in August we had 3 Pink Galahs turn up for an afternoon Island break, who could blame them? They were a bit far from home but they were a welcome sight!

‘The Living Room’ bringing Mantas into your home!

Our Lady Elliot Island Manta Rays were guest stars on the Living Room a few weeks ago with Dr Chris Brown getting up close and personal with our resident rays! Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort will be featured again on the Living Room on Friday 9th October.

Tune into Channel 10 at 7.30pm to catch up with your friendly Island team!
