Turtle Season!

It has been an incredible Turtle Season on Lady Elliot Island with so many amazing experiences had by our guests!  Our Activities Team ensure that they track and record turtle movements on Lady Elliot Island to determine trends and statistics for future years to come.

This year we have recorded 76 marked nests, 1,167 turtle tracks and over 550 recorded hatchlings (not all recorded as they may emerge when no one is around).

Milestone

Last week Lady Elliot achieved a remarkable milestone. We reached an average of only 60 litres of fuel burn per day to make power to run the resort. This is a considerable reduction from the original 550 litres per day and almost a 90% fuel reduction since our renewable journey began in 2008!

We operate the resort with all the same requirements necessary on the mainland PLUS we make our own water by desalination of ocean water, operate a large kitchen including commercial fridges and freezers, run air conditioners, dive compressors, OSCA (onsite composting machine), treat our own wastewater in our Waster Water Treatment Plant and run our machinery workshop, all this on a small budget with limited resources.

We have been aiming for this goal since 2005. At the time we took over the resort we were buring 550 litres of fuel per day and had half the occupancy we do now. Our long term goal is 100% renewable energy and with this milestone, we're not that far off!

We continue to prove wrong those who say that base load power can't come from renewable energy.

I wish to thank our maintenance crew and all the Island Team for working together to achieve this fantastic result. We have proved it can be done on renewables at a reasonable capital cost.
