Click here On behalf of Peter Gash, family and the team at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year and we cannot be thankful enough to those who supported us during these challenging times. When we reflect back on 2020, it feels like a dream waving goodbye to our last guests on the 30th March after closing our doors due to the non-essential travel ban. The Island then sat home to only our caretakers for a total of 77 days. Whilst it was a year of many challenges for everyone, it was also a year that bought our island community closer. On the 12th June we welcomed our guests back, the down pour that day didn't dampen our spirits. For many months we welcomed only Queenslanders, until the nation began to open back up. It has been an uphill climb since and are so pleased to say that with a slightly reduced capacity we are now operating at all most 100%. It has been exciting to welcome Queenslanders and Australians to #holidayherethisyear and showcase the beautiful Southern Great Barrier Reef Region. We must give an enormous thank you to our incredible and resillient team, both on island and off island. They showed strength, commitment and mate ship during this time, and we will be forever thankful. They continued to provide you with our world renowned Great Barrier Reef Experience, all with a smile and your health and safety first. Our team were able to complete some pretty amazing jobs during this time:
Our thoughts go out to everyone this holiday season and we hope you have all been able to come together in celebration of family, strength and resilience. Please take care and stay safe. The Great Barrier Reef is waiting and we can't wait to see you in 2021! TURTLE TIME It's that magical time of year again where our beaches become nesting grounds for the beautiful Green and Loggerhead Turtles! We are very fortunate to have three (3) species of sea turtles frequent Lady Elliot Island throughout the year – Hawksbill, Green and Loggerhead turtles. Green and Loggerhead turtles are the only ones that nest on the Island, nesting occurs on Lady Elliot Island between November and March. Nesting normally happens after dark when there is sufficient water for them to swim ashore, usually in association with the high tide. Nests can be found anywhere around the Island but the majority of nests have been recorded in the sand dunes in front of the resort and either end of the airstrip. These gentle giants nest on Lady Elliot Island up to nine times in a season, laying between 80 and 120 eggs per clutch. Under the careful guidance of our Turtle Rangers, guests of all ages can experience this amazing phenomena. If encountering a nesting turtle, please ensure to follow our Turtle Eco Guidelines. Together we can make a difference! NESTING REEF EGRETS Have you ever seen a baby Eastern Reef Egret? The Eastern Reef Egrets are mostly found on the Queensland coast and the Great Barrier Reef. They breed throughout the year and nests can be found in trees, island woodlands, on the ground or under shrubs. Due to this, their nests can often be hard to spot. This year Jodi our Guest Services Manager captured this stunning photo of a pair of baby Eastern Reef Egrets just hatched. A very special moment! CORAL SPAWNING! Our team were lucky enough to witness the #coralspawning2020 event on Lady Elliot Island Saturday night! Master Reef Guide Jess captured these beautiful photos from the Lagoon! Starting 3-4 days after the full moon in November and December, when the water temperature is just right the reef will begin to spawn. Billions of eggs are released into the water and the reproductive process of the world’s largest coral ecosystem comes to life! This is an incredibly important moment in time to show the world that the Reef is very much alive and needs every one of us to conserve it.
