It has been a busy last few months for us out on the island with a high volume of nesting turtles, nesting seabirds and excited guests eager to explore the Southern Great Barrier Reef. 2022 will bring with it ongoing improvements to the resort and island as we continue our revegetation and take the next step in renovations, beginning with the Garden Units. In the last two months, two Blanket Octopus have been sighted in the waters off Lady Elliot Island. These Cephalopods are extremely elusive and spend their entire life in the open ocean. Both individuals sighted were females and displayed colourful capes encasing their tentacles. We believe that there have only ever been a handful of sightings at Lady Elliot, so each encounter is very special! The sighting gained international attention and was shared in a number of publications across the world and was featured on several Australian news channels. Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort strives to lead by example in sustainability and environmentally friendly options. The business is a world-leading, award-winning ecologically sustainable tourism operator, dedicated to protecting and enhancing Lady Elliot Island, the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding communities. The work we have accomplished so far has involved hard work from many staff members and volunteers which are an integral part of the organisation. Here is a look at some of our goals moving into 2022 and the things that were achieved in late 2021. Recent achievements: Reef Check visit: Surveys were conducted on the reef and assistance was given to the team conducting Crown-of-Thorns Starfish and Drupella snail removal The first Lithium batteries were installed late last year in the Hybrid Solar Power Station New signage has been installed across the island to better inform guests about the environment, flora and fauna, and available tours during their stay Upcoming goals for 2022: Revegetation: Work has begun on the revegetation of the old airstrip on the western side of the island. This area will be slowly filled with Pisonia trees and other natives to increase nesting habitat for seabirds Griffith University collaboration: Students from Griffith University are assessing the impact of our eco-initiatives on guest behaviour QUIZ TIME! Have you been keeping up with our weekly quizzes on our Instagram page? Each week we share #TriviaTuesday, a great way to learn more about Lady Elliot Island and the marine life that calls the island home! Below are the turtle nesting statistics as of the 15th of January 2022. Each morning, a turtle ranger walks a lap of the island, counting the number of tracks, turtles and nests. Each night during peak season, you will also find a turtle ranger on the beach ensuring turtles are not disturbed, plus answering any questions about the nesting process. ISLAND BLOG Three new blogs have been added to our website including a wildlife calendar blog, nesting season information and a look into the scientific work conducted on the island.
