Over the last two months, there have been at least three different sightings of the extremely rare Ornate Eagle Ray whilst snorkelling! Sightings have come from staff members and scientists conducting research on the island. If you come across this unique beauty, ensure to #leaftoreef on Instagram when sharing your images. Image Credit: Asia Haines and Manfred Vijars FEBRUARY FIELD TRIP The Leaf to Reef research team visited the island for their first 2022 field-trip in February commencing year 3 of the 4 year project Generating critical knowledge to support resilience-based management of Lady Elliot Island. Research included Capricorn silvereyes, turtles, ground water, bird counts, fish assemblages, coral coverage, coral assemblages, sampling of invertebrates and sediment sampling. Turtle health assessments were a focus on this trip involving blood tests, body condition index, tagging, toxicology and plastic ingestion assessments. This information provides an assessment of baseline health parameters for the Lady Elliot sea turtle population which will inform us of the health of our turtles or if they have been exposed to plastic pollution, metal pollution or/and chemicals. The team visits Lady Elliot island three times a year to conduct research as part of the Reef Islands initiative. The Reef Islands Initiative is establishing a network of climate change refuges by protecting critical habitats across the Great Barrier Reef. Pioneered by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the 10-year program is supported by funding from Lendlease, the Australian Government’s Reef Trust, the Queensland Government and the Fitzgerald Family Foundation in collaboration with Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort. Renovations have now been completed on our Reef Units, Eco Cabins and our 2-bedroom Beachfront Units. The remaining Garden Units are scheduled for renovations during 2022 and 2023!
