In 2023, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort celebrated a year of remarkable achievements. The completion of extensive renovation projects showcased our commitment to providing an enhanced guest experience, with all resort rooms now thoughtfully refurbished. Our dedication to preserving history and heritage culminated in the opening of a brand-new Heritage Museum, commemorating 150 years of the Heritage Listed Lighthouse. Embracing technological advancements, guests can now effortlessly secure their stay online through our user-friendly booking platform. We introduced effective measures against Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) and Drupella, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to reef preservation in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Tourism Reef Protection Initiative. Our commitment to environmental stewardship was further exemplified through the continuation of our revegetation program, guests were delighted to partake on National Tree Planting Day, promoting biodiversity and sustainability. Introducing our brand-new state-of-the-art glass-bottom boat 'Spirit' enhanced our guests' underwater experiences. The addition of two new Master Reef Guides elevated our commitment to environmental education, enriching the knowledge of both our guests and team. Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort proudly welcomed esteemed guests, including Senator Nita Green and USA Ambassador Caroline Kennedy. These collective efforts were recognized on the national stage, as we proudly became finalists in the Banksia Foundation Awards for Biodiversity. In this month's Sustainability Spotlight, we explore the eco-friendly heartbeat of our island paradise. Delving into our composting initiatives and how we're cultivating sustainability, nurturing the delicate balance of our coral cay, and amplifying our commitment to a greener tomorrow. Over 150kgs of food, cardboard and green waste is processed daily on Lady Elliot Island through sustainable composting techniques. The Resort's onsite composting apparatus known as (OSCA) not only addresses the challenges of waste management on a remote coral cay but also plays a crucial role in supporting our revegetation efforts. By composting organic waste on-island, we are creating nutrient-rich compost, enhancing soil fertility and providing an optimal environment for plant growth. This process directly contributes to the island's broader revegetation strategy, promoting the restoration of native flora and the preservation of the delicate island ecosystem. This choice of onsite composting differs significantly from in-ground composting commonly used elsewhere. There are numerous reasons that in-ground techniques aren't favourable on a coral cay, most importantly interfering with the fragile surrounding reef environment. This on-site composting approach is more space-efficient and adaptable, allowing for efficient waste management without compromising the island's natural integrity. This method ensures that the composting benefits directly contribute to the island's ecological restoration, making Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort a model for sustainable practices in island environments.
