Turtle Time

Turtle season has arrived, and it’s a magical time of year! This season is off to a great start, with a healthy number of nesting turtles on our beaches! While it’s a bit smaller than recent years, these fluctuations are all part of the natural cycle. Our team is actively monitoring nests and hatchlings, gathering insights to understand the population on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Guests can witness the wonder of turtles nesting at night or watch hatchlings racing to the sea as they emerge from their nests, an unforgettable experience! When interacting with turtles on the beach, please maintain a safe distance, use low wattage or red lights, and follow our team’s guidance.

Due to last minute cancellations, we currently have availability in February for you to witness this magic time. Check availability with our Reservations Team on +61 7 5536 3644 or book online today!

Turtle Season Nov-Apr

Green and Loggerhead turtles are the only ones that nest on Lady Elliot Island. Nesting occurs between November and March. These gentle giants' will nest up to nine times in a season, laying between 80 and 120 eggs per clutch.

At the end of the nesting season thousands of baby turtles push through their sand nest on their way to the sea. This wonder of nature occurs only metres from the resort beach balconies and can be observed at close quarters by all. Turtle hatching season normally runs from February through to April. Come witness this magical time of year for yourself!

Seabird Season Sep-Apr

Lady Elliot Island is a bird lovers haven with thousands of sea birds nesting on Lady Elliot Island during the summer breeding season. It gets quite busy and a little noisy at times (and sometimes a bit smelly) but it’s a very entertaining time on the Island!

Peak Manta Ray Season May-August

Lady Elliot Island is known as the ‘Home of the Manta Ray’ and these giant kites of the sea can be seen feeding around the island throughout the year but aggregate in larger numbers during the winter months (May-August). The manta ray is the world’s largest ray, with a wing span of up to seven meters.

”

Having snorkelled and dived all sections of the Great Barrier Reef for nearly 50 years, and having visited Lady Elliot every year for the last 28, I can’t speak highly enough of this island, the way it is managed, the staff, its conservation efforts, and the natural environment.
