What an incredible month it has been here on this beautiful and diverse coral cay! The turtle nesting season is in full swing, with 18 confirmed nests so far with 2 loggerhead and 16 green sea turtles, and we’re still witnessing the magical sight of turtles mating in the surrounding waters. Our turtle rangers have been walking the beaches during the evenings when there is a high tide and are thrilled to share that we’re expecting the first turtle hatchlings of the season to emerge on Boxing Day. Morning track counts have already reached 210, with some adventurous females taking quite the journey across the island. All the information we gather during turtle nesting and hatching season is shared with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Beneath the surface, the reef continues to put on a spectacular show with leopard, bull and tiger sharks spotted on snorkel safaris recently as well as a playful pod of dolphins. Manta rays are still hanging around the cleaning stations, the glassfish are schooling in extraordinary numbers around the western bommies, and we were treated to a late-season whale breaching display early one morning. The annual natural phenomenon of coral spawning is anticipated to occur between 8-12 December, we'll share any information we can about it in our next edition.
The island’s feathered friends are thriving too, with black-naped tern chicks fledging, sooty tern chicks growing strong, and migratory visitors including bar-tailed godwits gracing our shores.
Every day brings new wonders as we continue to monitor and protect this precious ecosystem along with our guests. We look forward to welcoming you to Lady Elliot Island soon and encourage you to read on to learn more about our new packages and Locals Only Offer. P.S.
