Lady Elliot Island’s terrestrial restoration continues as part of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s landmark Reef Islands Initiative, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest reef habitat rehabilitation project launched in 2018.
In partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, this program transforms reef islands into climate change refuges through collaborative efforts between Traditional Owners, scientists, tourism leaders, and communities.
- Target areas: North West and North East coastal zone restoration and weed management
- Native nursery: Propagating coral cay grasses and shrubs for grassland rehabilitation
- Volunteers: 24 volunteers across 21 days from 3 community groups
- Plantings: ~600 native plants established in North West zone
- Invasive control: Ongoing removal of lantana, dragon fruit, and other problem species
- Research trials: Testing herbicide, flame weeding, and silage tarp methods for optimal weed control
We are very proud of the work conducted by our team and hard working volunteers who are leaving a legacy on Lady Elliot Island for generations to come.
